Aims and Objectives
Background
The Youth Centre was established in 1952 for young people in the Carlisle
Diocese and beyond. It is set apart
as a place for young people's leisure time activities. Its aim is the physical, mental and spiritual development of
young people, that they grow to full maturity as individuals and members of
society and that their conditions of life may be improved. (Trust Deed dated
18th December 1963)
The centre is managed by a
committee made up of representatives from Parish, Diocese, County Council and
Users
It is staffed by the Warden who
is also the parish priest of the neighbouring St. John's-in-the-Vale Church, a
part time caretaker and a cleaner.
The Carlisle Diocesan Youth
Centre is a registered charity, and is open to all organisations working with
young people on a not for profit basis.
Aims
The Management Committee and
Warden aim to:
- Provide opportunities for the development of young
people so that they can achieve their full physical, intellectual, social
and spiritual potentials
- Provide accommodation of high quality which can be
used as a resource and base for a variety of activities
- Provide advice, assistance and help in the
arrangement and delivery of residential activities
- Be well managed and conduct regular reviews in order
to improve and develop the centre and demonstrate value for money
- Welcome all young people regardless of their
background, circumstances, or beliefs
Objectives
The Centre is in an unique location situated away
from centres of population and main roads.
Alongside the grounds immediately surrounding the centre in which a
variety of activities can take place, it provides access to open fells where
more challenging activities can be organised Its central location in the Lake
District National Park ensure that there are opportunities for a wide variety of
activities including for example: water sports, mountain biking or rock
climbing, or many educational activities focusing on issues such as:
environmental studies, land management, development of communities; and further
afield in the west coast of Cumbria a chance to explore urban issues and
industrial heritage.
Through the opportunities that
are provided for young people participating in residential activities we want
to:
- To help build up
relationships and foster the elements of living together in community
through the residential experience, learning to work together, support each
other, to develop social skills and develop a greater consideration
for others. .
- To foster an understanding of themselves, others
around - in the communities which the groups come from and will return to -
and the world around us.
- To provide opportunities for the development of
skills through challenging activities leading to fulfilment and
self-confidence
- To provide opportunities for social interaction e.g.
sharing of experiences, development of relationships and trust.
- To learn to work together as a team, supporting and
encouraging one another
- To nurture an awareness of creation and their part
in it.
- To provide opportunities for exploration and
reflection on such issues as rural deprivation, environmental studies, urban
studies and the building of communities
- To nurture an
awareness of the spiritual nature of human beings
- To explore issues of personal spirituality and
provide an opportunity through reflection, meditation, worship or study to
respond where appropriate
- To have fun!
Priorities
Our keywords are Quality,
Safety and Flexibility. In implementing the aims and objectives, the Centre
assesses its work alongside these criteria.
Our priorities are:
- To enable as many young people as possible to use
the centre, and implementing appropriate ways of utilizing spare capacity
- To promote the centre amongst groups and
organisations in Cumbria, with particular focus on the areas of rural or
urban deprivation and those areas severely affected by the Foot and Mouth
Crisis
- To make the centre accessible to all young people
including those with physical disabilities
- To strengthen existing links and establish new
contact with organisations working with young people in Cumbria and further
afield, working alongside them in exploring appropriate strategies for
developing residential activities for young people
- To ensure regular maintenance, safety and
improvement of the facilities
