Building Work Completed at Centre in 2004

The Youth Centre was set up 50 years ago in the old St. John's-in-the-Vale school.  Groups from Cumbria and further afield use the centre as a base for their residential activities. Over the years thousands of Young People have visited the centre to enjoy the remote fellside location; sharing in a wide range of recreational activities as well as learning more about the environment and local area, growing in their spiritual lives and learning to live together with others and share in the common tasks of life.

The management committee, with members from Carlisle Diocese and the local community have been looking at ways to develop the Centre as a resource for groups for the coming 50 years.  They have been particularly aware of the needs of groups in the isolated rural areas of Cumbria, particularly in the aftermath of several crises which have affected Cumbria (three sets of floods and the Foot and Mouth crisis),  as well as the situation in many inner city areas and urban wards with multiple deprivation.  Often these groups have had little opportunity to access the resources that are available.  The developments will ensure use of the Centre by a wide range of groups that have never been able to visit the Centre before and open up opportunities for over 2500 people to stay at the Centre each year.

The Youth Centre was, in November 2003, awarded a grant of from the North West Region of the National Lottery’s Community Fund. The grant was used to fund the capital costs of refurbishing the Youth Centre Buildings and accommodation, install disabled facilities and enable flexible use of both buildings by the addition of a kitchen/common room in the annexe. The Management Committee worked closely with Mr Bob Metcalfe of MJN associates, Planning, Development and Management Consultant and Mr George Cummins of Day Cummins Architects of Cockermouth to do this refurbishment. Border Construction Ltd were appointed as the Main Contractor for the Building Work at the Youth Centre which began in July 2003 and was completed in January 2004.
